Oberlin Blogs

Ruby Turok-Squire ’16

I’m Ruby, a second-year student from England, doing a double degree in music composition and something in the college. I still have no clue what — and I seem to like changing my mind most days on that. I grew up in the town of bicycles and old buildings, a.k.a. Cambridge, and in South Africa — my dad’s from there, and my grandparents are MPs in the ANC. So, I’m not all that British. But I did once use the queen’s toilet when I was five (long story), so I guess I do have a royal connection...

And here I am, in a tiny town in rural Ohio. How did that happen? Anyway, I think I love it. Oberlin’s a little bubble of good things and good people. So far, it has been a massive rollercoaster. There’s so much to do and far too few hours in the day. I am very, very happy to be here, studying things that I love and having an incredible time.
