When your group term life insurance coverage ends, either because your employment has terminated, you retire from the college, or you are no longer eligible to participate in the group life insurance coverage, you have 31 days to decide if you would like to keep coverage.
Depending on your circumstances, you have two options:
- Portability - Take your group term life coverage with you and pay for it at group rates. This option does not build any cash value.
- Conversion - Change your group term life coverage to an individual whole life policy, which builds cash value. You pay the premium at individual rates. The right to convert your policy is guaranteed by law under certain circumstances.
If you believe one of these options is right for you, please schedule an appointment with Human Resources Benefits Team to have Section 1 of your election form completed and signed by an authorized representative.
