As a new Benefits Eligible employee, you are entitled to participate in the college’s Health and Benefits Plan effective the first day of the month following your date of hire (if you were hired on the first of the month, your benefits begin that day) provided your I-9, W-4 & Visa (if required) are completed by visiting the Department of Human Resources (HR), 173 W. New faculty and staff members have the option to reserve a spot for a New Hire Benefits Zoom Orientation or schedule an appointment with the benefits representative.
When enrolling in benefits, you will be doing so through the end of the current calendar year. You will only be allowed to make changes to your enrollment choices if you have a qualifying event take place, such as marriage, divorce, birth/adoption, change in dependent eligibility, a change in employment status, or loss of other coverage. In October, HR will conduct Open Enrollment for the next benefit calendar year.
Enrollment into the benefit plans must be done within 31 days of date of eligibility. Failure to enroll within this 31-day window may result in forfeiture of certain enrollment rights under some of the plans.
Common Questions About Benefits
How soon after being hired do benefits go into effect?
If your date of hire is on the first day of the month, benefits will be effective on your date of hire.
If your date of hire is not on the first day of the month, benefits go into effect on the first day of the month following your date of hire.
Date of hire is July 1st; benefit effective date will be July 1st
Date of hire is July 13th; benefit effective date will be August 1st

When is the Annual Open Enrollment period?
Open Enrollment for Oberlin College is held during the month of October. Any changes made will be effective January 1st of every calendar year.
Active employees, retirees and qualified dependents are encouraged to attend our Annual Benefits Fair.
