Permitted and Prohibited Items
Items Permitted In Residence Halls
- Aquariums equal to or smaller than 20 gallons
- Area Rug (small) with a tag stating it's flame-retardant
- Bean Bag Chair with a tag stating it's flame-retardant
- Candles with wick removed
- Coffee makers, clothing iron and or curling iron with automatic shut-off
- Fans (window fan, box fan, tower fan, floor fan)
- Hairdryers
- Humidifiers & Dehumidifiers
- Kitchen knives with blades less than 6 inches
- Mini Refrigerator, only one per room/unit, not exceeding 5 cubic ft
- Waste Baskets must be flame-retardant
Items Permitted Only in Village Housing (Prohibited in Residence Halls)
- Wooden structures, including lofts and room dividers (not permitted in Firelands)
- Water coolers (Any damage the residence sustains from water coolers is solely the responsibility of the house/apartment residents.)
- Cooking appliances (popcorn poppers, hot plates, water heaters, toasters, microwaves, rice cookers, etc.)
- Curtains
- George Foreman style grills
Items Prohibited In Residence Halls
- Air Conditioners (Students who require an AC unit for medical reasons must receive approval from the Office for Disability and Access. Once approved, the student will be moved to a room that meets their accommodation.)
- Airfryers
- Amplifiers
- Appliances without automatic shut-off (included but not limited to: coffeemakers, clothing irons, hair curling irons)
- Cooking appliances (including but not limited to: immersion heaters, popcorn poppers, hot plates or burners, water heaters, toasters, toaster ovens, microwaves, rice cookers)
- Electric, kerosene or other portable heaters
- Flammable wastebaskets
- Grills
- Halogen lamps
- Lights not UL-approved
- Lights of higher wattage than the specified rating of the fixture
- More than 1 refrigerator per unit/space - (3 allowed in a quad)
- Any refrigerator exceeding 5 cubic feet (Length x Height x Depth)
- Ungrounded extension cords (must have 3 prongs)
- Water coolers
- Alcohol in underage student possession
- Common source containers of alcohol (including but not limited to: kegs, beer balls)
- Drugs or illegal substances
- Drug paraphernalia (including but not limited to: pipes, bongs, hookahs)
- Items used for quick or mass consumption of alcohol (including but not limited to: beer bongs)
- Any items affixed to or hanging from the ceiling
- Curtains, blinds and or window treatments other than what the college provides
- Electric blankets or electric mattress pad covers
- Fabrics taking up more than 20% of a wall
- Fabrics affixed to or hanging from the ceiling
- Water-filled furniture
- Wooden structures, including lofts and room dividers
- Ammunition (including but not limited to: gunpowder, mace, pepper spray)
- Fireworks or explosives
- Lock-picking devices
- Staffs or foils (must be kept in locker by classroom)
- Weapons (including but not limited to: rifles, shotguns, pistols, air pistols, spring powered weapons, BB guns, kitchen knives, switchblade knives)
- Animals of any kind (fish and aquatic-only turtles allowed)
- Aquariums larger than 20 gallons
- Bicycles blocking egress
- Combustible fluids (gasoline, kerosene, paint thinners, etc.)
- Candles with a burned wick (includes holiday decorations)
- Dartboards and darts(magnetic dartboards are permitted)
- Double-sided tape, intended for permanent or semi-permanent adhesion to surfaces, is not permitted. This includes the type of double-sided tape found on strip lights and other wall-mounted items. Command strips may be used, provided they are installed and removed properly.
- Fire pits, butane and propane style torches, table-top torches, micro torches, and extended reach lighters
- Incense
- Motorcycles or other motorized machinery
- Poisonous, hazardous or unstable chemicals
- Trees live or artificial over 4 ft tall (includes holiday trees)
