Community Music School

Musicianship and Theory (ages 5–18)

The CMS Musicianship Program is designed for students ages 5–18. This continuum of classes will familiarize students with important music literacy skills that will aid security in reading, hearing, and understanding music. Classes will be taught in a creative and lively manner and will include elements of composition.

A skills assessment is given at the beginning of each semester to make sure that students are placed in the appropriate class. If there is question about which course to register for, contact the CMS directorFinancial aid is available for these classes.


Musicianship A (ages 5–7)

This 10-week class will introduce basic note reading, rhythmic reading, and ear-training skills. Students will have the opportunity to strengthen these important skills through a series of creative games.

Musicianship B (ages 8–11)

This 10-week class is a continuation of Musicianship A. Focus will be put on note reading with speed, understanding more complex rhythmic patterns and meters, and further building ear-training skills. In order to provide an engaging experience for the student, games will continue to be the focus of this class. Upon completion of this class, students should be ready to join the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra(s) and/or the Oberlin Community Music School chamber music program.

Musicianship C (ages 11–16)

This 10-week class will offer the emerging musician the musical skills to develop instrumental or vocal proficiency. The student will go through a systematic approach to building the fundamentals of scales, keys, meter, rhythm, and ear-training. Students may be asked to bring their instruments to class.

This class will offer the developing musician the opportunity to build upon the fundamental skills introduced in Musicianship C.

Musicianship E (ages 13–18)

This class is a continuation of that which is learned in Musicianship D. This class is for students with solid fundamental theory and ear-training skills, that are interested in taking their musicianship to the next level.
