Associate Professor of Anthropology Cal Biruk presented work in progress and acted as a discussant on two panels sponsored by the Queer African Studies Association at the annual meeting of the African Studies Association held on November 30 and December 1, 2018, in Atlanta.

Andrew Pau Publishes Article

November 28, 2018

Associate Professor of Music Theory Andrew Pau's article "Common-Tone Tonality in Bizet's Carmen" was published in the journal Music Theory Spectrum. The article explores ways in which a harmonic analysis of George's Bizet's score can illuminate the dramatic structure of Carmen, one of the most popular operas in the repertoire.

Michael Parkin Contributes Chapter

Professor of Politics Michael Parkin contributed a chapter, "The Context for Comedy: Presidential Candidates and Comedy Television," to the edited volume Political Humor in a Changing Media Landscape. The chapter argues that contextual factors like timing, momentum, and legitimacy have been critically important in establishing the connection between presidential candidates and comedy television during the past few decades.

Jennifer Fraser Presents at Conference

Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology and Anthropology Jennifer Fraser presented the paper “Dangers of Fieldwork & Dangers of Sex Work: Erotics in/of/and Ethnomusicology” as part of an organized panel called “Access, Risk, Safety, and Gender in Ethnomusicological Fieldwork: Reflections, Analysis, and Directions in the Age of #MeToo” at the 63rd annual Society for Ethnomusicology conference in Albuquerque, NM. Fraser's paper was about her #MeToo moments of sexual abuse and harassment part of ethnomusicological research in Indonesia during the past 24 years and the ways it shaped her professional career.

Anne Salsich Publishes in Archival Outlook

Associate Archivist Anne Salsich's article "Sanctuary at Oberlin: The Archives bear Witness" was published in the November/December issue of Archival Outlook, the news magazine of the Society of American Archivists. The article is a version of her invited talk at the National Council for Public History annual meeting, and cover features one of the images in the project, a poster made by Oberlin students in response to the May 4, 1970 killings at Kent State University. The article begins on page six.
