Devices and Applications
We understand that you may arrive on campus with a variety of technological devices, including computers and mobile devices. Our goal is to assist you in connecting as many of these devices as possible.
Faculty and Staff Computer Assignments
CIT provides a computer to eligible faculty and staff who are employed at least half-time and whose job responsibilities require an individually assigned device.
How it works
- HR Onboarding: In most cases, you do not need to request a computer. Your hiring manager or onboarding coordinator will work with CIT to determine and request the technology needed for your role.
- Setup & Delivery: Once your computer assignment is confirmed, CIT will prepare your device, install any required software, and contact you to schedule equipment pickup or delivery.

In order to adhere to applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards of insurability, all college-owned Information Technology adheres to several endpoint security requirements.

Student Computer Recommendations
New students often ask us for recommendations on what computer to buy. While there’s no right answer, we suggest purchasing a laptop with a solid state hard drive (SSD), at least 512 GB of hard drive storage space, and 16 GB of RAM.
Who uses what?
Neither Windows nor Macintosh operating systems are required for any discipline at Oberlin.
If you’re on the fence about which system to purchase, reach out to a faculty member in your discipline to see whether software that you’ll find in your area of study works well on your desired operating system.
What if I don’t have a laptop?
There are several open-use computer labs on campus that students may use if they do not bring a computer to college or need access to Windows or Mac-specific software that their computer does not support.
Internet of Things (IoT) Devices
Connect smart devices such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, Sonos speakers, gaming consoles, and other supported devices using the ObieConnect wireless network.
Software Access
CIT provides software and enterprise systems that support teaching, learning, research, and administrative work. Software access is role-based and follows the principle of least privilege to ensure appropriate access while supporting security and compliance.
