Last week was a week full of words.

As our Director of Athletics, William Roth, puts it: "'Learning and Labor' is just a rephrasing of 'sound mind, sound body.'"

How Oberlin helped me cope after an oil spill (the cooking kind, not the Gulf Coast kind) left me with serious burns splattered along my hand and leg. Pictures not included.

Having a sense of humor helps a lot when you're sick. So do cartoons and silly puzzle-solving video games.

Or, how one person and one organization changed my entire Oberlin experience for the better.

I feel totally comfortable in Oberlin. I don't worry about homophobia, sexism, or personal security. I can go running at 2AM here, without fearing for my life. I can smile at strangers. I can be myself. Leaving Oberlin means leaving home.

After a brief walk in the crisp night air during which I considered making pirate jokes, we arrived at the hospital.

I love the gym. I love sweating. I love running. I love lifting things. I love feeling my muscles quake.... Confession #12: I'm a gym rat.

The drugs, plus several more days of going to bed at grandma hours, eventually cured me.

It wasn't fun trying to get all my work done and sleep more and walk around with a sore throat, but I managed it pretty well, with the help of cough drops and perseverance. Until Sunday night.

Lorain County has an amazing set of metro parks all over the county, full of hiking/running paths, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, creeks, waterfalls, natural wetlands, tons of wildlife - and all linked by a bikeable set of country highways that make up the Back Roads and Beaches route.
