How I Spend My Free Time

December 29, 2020

Tim Martin ’22

Lately, I have had a lot of free time now that my amazing internship with Sony Music ended. Since my days are no longer filled with immediate tasks to complete, I frequently think to myself, Tim, what did you do today? Since this question comes to my mind so often, I figured I would share what I do with most of my free time with you guys.

One activity that I have been doing frequently is watching YouTube videos. I oftentimes will watch finance-themed videos where people discuss their career paths as well as things to know about their jobs. I genuinely find the information they are talking about in the videos interesting and very useful as it allows me to know which skills I should develop for potential positions I could work in. Hearing all of the investment bankers and business analysts talk about their stories in the finance industry is super exciting, especially knowing that Oberlin has prepared me to not only work but succeed in the finance industry. When I am not watching finance videos on YouTube I am most likely watching sports talk shows. Recently a group of former NFL players came out with the I Am Athlete podcast which discusses anything from everyday life experiences to the latest stories in sports. One thing I find especially exceptional about the podcast is that for decades the media has made millions of dollars off of NFL athletes, so it is nice to see retired athletes create their own media platform and make money off of the brand they spent years building. I definitely encourage you to check it out as it is my favorite podcast out right now!

Another thing I have been doing is reading informational books that can help me in my career long term. If you have read my previous blogs then you know I plan on going into finance after college. This has led me to read books that cover topics such as techniques for analyzing industries, as well as the history of certain organizations in the financial industry. I would definitely encourage any person that has an internship coming up to learn as much as possible about the company they will be working for. I feel that it will allow you to be a more valuable asset if you know the ins and outs of the company, as well as what the company stands for as a whole.

Something I do at least four times a week is an intense training session. At the moment, I don’t have any weights to lift but that is no excuse to not continue working at my craft. I have the benefit of being raised by a father who trained professional athletes for a living so I know how to work out without using weights. While I’m listing this as something I do in my free time, I take it very seriously as I view football as a potential career path for me. I would have to say my favorite workout that I have been doing lately is the “hill workout.” For the hill workout, you sprint up a hill ten to twenty times, then you also do a single leg cycle jump up the hill four to eight times, all depending on how big your hill is and how much you have been training. I then wrap the workout up by doing four sets of five reps of knee tuck jumps as well as band walks. While I would prefer it if I could add Olympic weightlifting exercises to this workout routine, that is not possible at the moment, so I am just going to continue doing the best that I can with what I have. If your New Year’s resolution is to work out more, make sure you comment below on what exercises you plan on doing!

As far as something I am really trying to cut down on, I would have to say I would like to use social media less. Sometimes I find myself on an endless loop of clicking on Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn, which obviously is not good for my productivity. If I had to establish a goal for myself, I would say that I would be proud if I only spend thirty minutes a day on social media. This would allow me to read more books and develop skills that will help me in the long run instead of scrolling aimlessly on social media.

I hope you all enjoyed hearing about what I have been doing with the majority of my free time. It definitely is important to me that I am productive even if I don’t have anything that I necessarily have to do. Make sure you comment below and let me know what you have been doing with all of your time!
