Just this time last year, I was posting my first ever “day in the life” style blog, complete with time stamps and pictures. In the introduction of that post, I wrote:
With any luck, this will become an annual tradition. This time next year, I’ll be able to reflect fondly on my first year and muse over how my schedule has changed.
So, here we are. May 10th, 2025. Exactly one year later. Yesterday was the last day of classes of my second year of college, and let me tell you, I was right to think that things would be different.
Over the past year, I’ve declared an additional major and minor, joined a co-op, and gotten a new job! I’ve also gotten a little less diligent with my blogging, so you may notice that this blog is more scarce on the photography element than last year’s was...
So, here’s a day in my life, once again from a busy Monday during the last week of classes.
8:30 am — wake up
Although I had an impressive 7:30 wake up time in last year’s blog, my morning timeline has honestly varied quite a lot between semesters, depending on my class schedule. This semester, however, my co-op has started serving breakfast, which is super helpful to get me up and out of bed even though I don’t have any morning classes!
8:45 am — breakfast
I wander downstairs (that’s right, I live in a co-op now) in my PJs to find a small collection of breakfast-goers in the Hark dining space. I have some scrambled eggs and grab an orange from the walk-in fridge.
9:00 am — lounge time
My friends Rose and Reyna are sitting in the lounge on the first floor, and there’s beautiful sunlight coming in through the east-facing windows. We sit and chat while they drink their coffee.
9:30 am — get ready
After spending perhaps a little too long dawdling in the lounge, I head back upstairs to get ready for the day, make my bed, and roll up my window shades. One thing I love about living in Hark is the big windows. You can never have enough natural light!
10:00 am — homework & finals
I have a draft of my final sociology paper due on Wednesday, so I settle in to get some writing done in preparation for our peer review session. I’m writing about the history of the essentialist divide between radical and cultural ecofeminisms, and I’m working with a peer group who are exploring similar topics in queer ecology.
11:00 am — help unpack food order
After about an hour of work, I get an email that a food order has been delivered and they need help in the kitchen. I head back downstairs to help unload the various bags of dried goods and safely store them in our pantry.
11:30 am — work on my BFA application
When I get back to my room, I’ve received an email that the BA/BFA application form has opened, and I spend the last chunk of my morning working on filling out the application form. With any luck you’ll be hearing a lot more from me about it sometime soon...
12:00 pm — walk to the hotel for a meeting
In my job as an Accessibility Coordinator for the Oberlin Student Cooperative Association, I regularly meet with other staff members to ensure that everything is running smoothly. Today’s meeting, called Personnel Committee, is sort of like OSCA’s HR department.
1:15 pm — eat lunch super fast
After my meeting, I speed walk back to Hark to grab my saveplate, a plate of leftovers made specifically for me! Lunch is brown rice with lentil dahl and roasted zucchini (yum!). I add some shredded cheese on top and throw it in the microwave before racing to Bibbins for my first class of the day.
1:30 pm — Music & Propaganda
Although I am not a Conservatory student, I am taking a Musicology class this semester. Covering the history of cultural exchange during the Cold War, this class counts towards my Dance major. Although I didn’t expect to be taking any classes in the Con, I have really enjoyed this class and learned a lot about the history of dance as a political tool.
2:30 pm — Environmental Sociology
When my class gets out in Bibbins, I quickly cross the street to King and climb to the third floor for my last class of the day. We spend the class reflecting on the semester and talking about what we’ve learned.
3:30 pm — office hours
As soon as my class ends, I start walking east for (you guessed it) another meeting for my job! I meet with the other Accessibility Coordinator every week to make sure we’re on the same page, and today we mostly just answer emails.
4:30 pm — chores
We’re getting ready for the end of the school year, so there’s a lot of spring cleaning that needs to be done at the co-op. I scrub down a shower and finish a few other small tasks.
5:15 pm — walk to the art library
I walk back across Tappan, for the third time today, to meet my friend Saffy in the art library and keep working on my Sociology paper. This is one of my favorite spots on campus!
6:20 pm — dinner
Back at Hark, it’s Superbowl Meal! Everything is vegan, and we’re having cauliflower wings, buffalo tofu dip with tortilla chips, and garlic knots. There’s also homemade barbecue sauce and kale salad.
7:30 pm — capstone performance
I’m dancing in a senior capstone called Spirit Gum, so I walk across Tappan... again... to start getting into costume and setting up the space. We’re performing in Fairchild Chapel, and it starts pouring outside just as the show begins. The thunder and lightning adds a great effect.
9:30 pm — line dancing prom!
I’ve been getting really into line dancing this semester, and this is the last event of the year. I walk over to the ’Sco in the pouring rain and dance the night away in my boots and tutu with my friend LJ.
12:30 am — back to Hark, shower
Prom doesn’t end until midnight, and by the end of the night I’m drenched in sweat. I head back home to take a quick shower before collapsing into bed.
1:00 am — bedtime
It’s been a busy day and I fall asleep pretty quickly. After all, I have to wake up and do it all again tomorrow!
