It's no secret that Oberlin College loves to celebrate Halloween. With events on campus such as Get Wilder in Wilder Bowl, OBurlesque at the Cat in the Cream, and countless performances at the 'Sco, Obies have endless opportunities to dress up and show off their looks. So, this Halloweekend, I decided to capture some of my favorite Obie costumes:
Miss Frizzle (The Magic School Bus)
Nina Bezkorovainy ('29) captures the vibe of our favorite childhood teacher. Her dress is thrifted, but she singlehandedly crafted all the details to make this costume come to life. You can't see it in the picture, but Nina also sported a school-bus-shaped shoulder bag. 10/10, no notes.
Sloane Peterson (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)
Harper Crosby ('28) rocks the iconic 80s fashion of our favorite cool girl, Sloane. Every detail is perfect, from the white jacket to the "save Ferris" pin on the vest. This costume is just niche enough, we love to see it. 10/10 Harper!
Glorp (The Alien Cat)
Butters, Mia, and Ivy ('29) dress as our favorite intergalactic kitty meme--Glorp. The shade of green is just right, and the outfit coordination makes this the perfect trio costume. They even dressed up their palm pal!!! You might have seen this group at Get Wilder on Thursday night--the neon green definitely catches the eye. 10/10 guys.
Princess Caroline (Bojack Horseman)
Speaking of cats, Caitlyn Dwyer ('29) is the hardworking boss kitty we all aspire to be (just maybe without the horse). She gets every aspect of Caroline's outfit just right, with the blue dress, yellow cardigan, and even the necklace with the red pendant! Pink looks good on you, Caity. 10/10.
Ethel Caine
Jaime Laber ('29) looks hauntingly beautiful in this Ethel Caine look. They thrifted the dress, the jewelry, and went the extra mile by wearing a long brunette wig. If you look closely, you can even see their hand-drawn tattoos mirroring Caine's. Perfect costume for a college that loves alternative indie music. 10/10 Jamie!
Rocky and Frank N Furter (The Rocky Horror Picture Show)
Greta Rubenstein ('29) and Sofia Kowalczyk ('29) are rock-ing these outfits (or, lack thereof). Greta goes all out with Rocky's little gold shorts, and even drew his iconic abs on with contour. Sofia honors the late Tim Curry with her fishnets, heels, corset, and wig. Are you shivering with anticip.....ation? 10/10 work you two!
Elizabeth Holmes and Nathan Fielder (You Can See Everything)
Neva Whitcomb ('29) and Sunny Scott ('29) might just win Halloween with this costume. Neva stuns with Holmes's iconic turtleneck, blonde ponytail, and infamous pill. Sunny somehow manages to be recognizable as Fielder by carrying around a camera and headset. If you haven't already, make sure to catch the cinematic phenomenon You Can See Everything at the Apollo Theater downtown. 10/10 costumes guys.
Werewolf of London
I'd be remiss if I didn't include my own Halloween costume. One of my favorite Halloween songs of all time is "Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon, so I decided to bring the werewolf to life this Halloweekend. I thrifted this "I Heart London" hoodie from Depop, and obtained typical werewolf accessories (ears, paws, fuzzy legwarmers, etc.). You can't see it in the picture, but I made sure to carry around a Chinese menu all night, paying homage to the opening lyrics of Zevon's song. Am I allowed to give myself a 10/10? I think so. Great work, Me!
