Day in the Life: 3rd-Year Edition

Lauren K. ’27

Good morning! On this beautiful sunny day, I rise bright and early for my 9am class. On the way, I stop at the Rathskeller (aka “Rat”) and enjoy a quick breakfast sandwich with my friends. We part ways and I head to my Clinical/Counseling Psychology class, where we have a short lecture and hate on Freud for a bit (a common occurrence in most psych classes).

Next up is my Human Nature and Morality class. This is the first Philosophy course I’ve taken at Oberlin, and so far I’m really enjoying it! We discuss the differences between moral realism and moral relativism and debate about the ethics of going to class barefoot. Before I know it, the clock hits 11am and I’m done with my classes for the day. That’s the nice thing about having all morning classes: even though I have to drag myself out of bed most mornings, I have the rest of the day to spend how I wish!

Next, I meet up with my friend Juliana to enjoy the nice weather and take a walk. She has a job walking her professor’s dogs, and she’s kind enough to let me hang out with her and the golden retrievers. We take a leisurely route around town and only have to pause once or twice for some mandatory rolling-in-the-grass time (for the dogs, not for Juliana and me).

After that nice breath of fresh air, I walk back to the middle of campus and pick up a rice bowl for lunch while I call my friend from back home to update her on all my recent drama. And yes, of course there’s drama, even though the semester started less than 3 weeks ago….

I spend the next hour relaxing in my room and getting ahead on some homework, knowing I have a busy day ahead of me. Around 1:30, I head over to the Office of Admissions to give a tour. I love being a tour guide because it gives me the opportunity to brag about Oberlin while getting paid—kind of like being a blogger…. I have a special guest on my tour today: an Oberlin alum! He tells me some fun facts about his time at Oberlin (did you know the Rathskeller used to sell beer?) and recounts seeing Joan Baez perform at Finney Chapel. Jealous!

After my tour I rush over to the Oberlin Elementary School for my Kids in Motion ExCo. (To read more blogs about ExCos, click here.) We spend some time playing games with the kids and get them pumped up for our end of semester dance performance.

On the way back home, I have a quick dinner and head back out for Songwriting Club. Shoutout to my songwriting friends; you guys are awesome! This week’s “homework” was to write a song based on another piece of media (a show, movie, book, etc.) and everyone’s songs were amazing, as always.

I can finally head back home around 7pm and relax in my dorm. I munch on some ice-cream as a reward for a long and busy day while I catch up on my guilty pleasure reality show (this week it’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives). As a last hurrah, my friends and I decide to go visit the Feve, which is open late. We share a plate of fries and enjoy some mocktails before heading back home to a very restful night. Until next time!
