Role of the Regional Coordinator

The purpose of the regional program is to promote the interests of Oberlin College in a specified geographical region by sponsoring events of interest to the college and the alumni in that region.

Although each region is different in several respects, i.e., size, local concerns, predominantly academic communities (Ann Arbor), multiple profile (Los Angeles), and proximity to the campus (Seattle), all regions have one common denominator: they are composed of Oberlin alumni who basically care about the past, present, and future of the college. Therefore, the Alumni Office has basic expectations of each Regional Coordinator.

  1. The Regional Coordinator is the primary contact for the college in the field.
  2. The Regional Coordinator is responsible for coordination of various alumni activities in the region, although not necessarily for the execution of all those activities. The Offices of Admissions, Development, and the Career Center are responsible for their respective volunteer projects in each region, but the Regional Coordinator should be knowledgeable of these activities, prevent schedule conflicts, and help facilitate these programs when possible.
  3. The Regional Coordinator is expected to hold at least two alumni functions in the area per year. One of these may be a prospective/admitted students program with the cooperation of the Admissions Office and the regional Admissions Recruiting Coordinator.
  4. When asked, the Regional Coordinator should help recruit volunteers in the region who will work for the Offices of AdmissionsDevelopment, and the Career Development Center.
  5. When interest and activity increase, the Regional Coordinator should form steering committees/boards which will give organization, structure, and support to local alumni activity. Boards should include the Admissions Recruiting Coordinator and the African AmericanAsian AmericanLatino, and OLA Regional Coordinators, if these are active.
  6. The Regional Coordinator is expected to initiate ideas for strengthening regional alumni activity. In turn, he or she may expect to receive the support and cooperation of the Alumni Office.

Regional Coordinators

Regional Coordinators are alumni volunteers and members of the Alumni Council who work with alumni in their area to promote Oberlin College and fellowship among alumni by sponsoring events of interest to the college and the alumni in that region. Are you interested in getting involved?

The Oberlin Alumni Association wants to encourage even more alumni to host events or plan activities that might interest fellow alumni in your area. The Office of Alumni Relations will support individuals interested in hosting an event outside of a traditional “club” model. This will enable more alumni to volunteer to host one event—or multiple events over the course of a year—without the need to officially start and maintain a club.

If you have an idea for a low-cost activity, such as a meet-up, potluck picnic, or professional panel event we would be happy to work with you to create the event. Our office can provide support for events in many ways, including: supporting event planning efforts, sending announcements and notifications, collecting registrations and providing name tags and day of event materials.

If you would like to discuss your event idea in more detail, please contact Brant Fairchild, Associate Director of Alumni Relations, at brant.fairchild@oberlin.edu .
