Tenor Lawrence Brownlee is a leading figure in opera, both as a singer who has graced the world's top stages, and as a voice for activism and diversity in the industry. Captivating audiences and critics around the globe, he has been hailed as “an international star in the bel canto operatic repertory” by The New York Times and “one of the most in-demand opera singers in the world today” by NPR. In recent seasons Brownlee has turned much of his attention to recitals and solo orchestral concerts. For his recital program at Oberlin with pianist Kevin Miller called “Rising”, Brownlee includes a series of recently commissioned works by African-American composers, with texts that draw from great Black authors and poets of the Harlem Renaissance. The second half of the program includes a selection of Bel Canto masterpieces.
