It's kind of crazy just how fast the summer has gone by. Fall semester classes begin on September 7th - just under a month from now - and I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to get ten boxes chock full of all of my worldly possessions from my summer rental on West Lorain into my new Union Street apartment before my lease is up...! But, I digress.
This summer has been a lot of things to me. It was the first summer that I've had to pay rent on my own, with the money that I've made at a full time job (I've been interning in Admissions - more about that later). It's also been one of the most eventful three-month stretches in my life, and if I listed all of the crazy things that have happened to me on this here blog, you'd be reading for days. So, instead, I'm going to focus on the thing that has most comprehensively come to define Oberlin summer to me - food.
I have equated Oberlin with good food for a while now. I had this picture:
YUM.
as my Facebook default for a hot second, soon after which one of my high school friends left the comment "OBERLIN = FOOD". Obviously, this made me laugh...but it's totally true. Perhaps you have read any number of these Oberlin blog posts about different culinary options here? Long story short - the food's mad tasty. My latest gastronomical adventures have taken place in my summer kitchen, where I've transformed myself into a sort of brunch, dinner, and dessert machine specially created for the express purpose of cranking out delicious delectables for my friends. Every meal is served on my front porch, mostly because the weather's nice...but also because I have a super sweet porch swing. Here are photos (all taken by the fantabulous Ma'ayan Plaut) from two tasty days that I've had this summer!
TOTALLY RAD CULINARY EVENT NUMBER ONE
June 25th: a leisurely Sunday brunch!
BACON, Y'ALL.
My favorite mug filled to the brim with my favorite beverage...
Brandi helped me out by chopping onions, garlic, and potatoes for the egg scramble.
Look! Friends! FOOD! YAY!
French toast, bacon, and southwestern egg scramble. What a great way to start a Sunday.
TOTALLY RAD CULINARY EVENT NUMBER TWO
August 10th: Baked Goods at Patrick's!
This is Patrick, one of my good friends who also happens to be one of my co-workers in Admissions. He just moved into a new apartment, and we wanted to warm it - literally, and figuratively.
Here I am, artistically icing cupcakes.
Brandi's being a creeper behind the deliciousness: banana cupcakes with homemade buttercream icing.
The Bowerman family specialty! Cream Cheese PAI. Yes, PAI. Say it like a Southerner.
A full plate: Brown Sugar Bars, pai, a cupcake, and browned butter chocolate chip cookies!
Man. Now I'm hungry.
