Marcus J. ’27

Hey! My name is Marcus Jensen, and I’m a second year here at Oberlin. I’m from Minneapolis, Minnesota - hometown of Prince, rollerblades, and honeycrisp apples! I love reading (especially Amor Towles, Leigh Bardugo, Jandy Nelson, and Erin Morgenstern) and perhaps while away too many hours at the Oberlin Public Library.

I'm particularly interested in recent media studies, especially regarding video games and TV shows as cultural touchpoints. Last fall, I taught an Experimental College course on the music of video games, and this spring I'm running a class centered on the hit show Arcane. I also chair 'Round Midnight, Oberlin's all-gender jazz and folk a cappella group and co-direct the WOBC (radio station) classical music group. Outside of that, I'm a course assistant for music history 101 and major representative for the Gender, Sexuality, & Feminist Studies (GSFS) and Musical Studies departments.

I’m absotively delighted to share some of my stories from Oberlin, discuss post-minimalist music (Steve Reich and Terry Riley are my favs, though I will steer the conversation far, far away from total serialism), and debate the various GSFS angles to character design in modern media. A current project that I'm super excited about is an article on depictions of witches in games - though if you have somewhere to be, maybe don't bring this up; this is a subject I can / will talk at length about...
