Letters away!

March 29, 2011

Jesse Hernandez

Yesterday afternoon I was privileged enough to witness the fourth annual "waving goodbye to the truck" day in the Admissions office. Let me tell you, it was quite the celebration. Months of processing, organizing, reading, reviewing, and (as I mentioned in my last blog) sometimes dreaming about applications culminated in our gathering in the mail room to witness the decision letters hauled off to the mail truck with much fanfare.

Members of the Admissions, Financial Aid, Communications, and Athletics offices withstood the chilly 30 degree weather to bid a fond farewell to a few thousand letters as they headed off into the great unknown. The conclusion of successfully reading and reviewing over 6,100 applications of course called for some partying, and so we all then shuffled back into the warmth of the mail room for cake and a champagne toast.

So, what does this mean for you applicants? Well, you should be hearing from us within the next few days. So, check your mailboxes!

I attempted to document the events with my cell phone, and have put together a visual timeline of the events below. Enjoy!

The gang has gathered

A group of people stand around on the sidewalk

The camera has been spotted by one of the indigenous people!

It takes a while to get them in...

Y'all drink Cook's too? I thought that was a poor college student thing!

Also, congrats. :D

Helena, I don't know whether to be impressed or worried about your ability to spot a blurry champagne bottle on a 500px wide cell phone image.

Brandy, our parties miss you too.

Almost there, Michael!

Man, that's a lot of letters. Congrats on getting it all in the mail! (And what does the cake say? Apparently I can't decipher fuzzy cell phone photos as well as Helena can...)

Yay! I spot an Oberlin poster in the background. I'm proud :)

I'm so excited! Can't wait to get my letter....it's the last one I'm waiting for. Thanks for taking so much time to get through them, I know it must be a lot of work!

Is the cake everybody's initials, perhaps?

Wow, what a bunch of letters. :)

The initials on the cake? Try:

So what were the statistics? The number of applications? The number of acceptances, rejections, waiting lists? Did the number of applications increase again?

The cake says: TGTLAITM (a much shorter way of saying Thank God The Letters Are In The Mail:)

Hello Jesse,

Thank you so much for the exciting news!
I have a question, I applied to Oberlin as a transfer student, do you know by when do we get to hear from the admissions decision for those applications?

Thank you and have a great day!

Hi Rony,

You can expect to hear from us about your transfer application decision within the next two weeks. Take care.
