De la Milpa a la Mesa: Jardín y Comida Comunitaria Maya en Ohio

Representatives of the Immigrant Worker Project offer a workshop on the Maya community garden and traditional food in Ohio as part of the "Growing Justice, Creating Community" college-community symposium organized by the Oberlin College Food Studies Program.

The Maya Community Garden is a place where land and memory come together. Here, Maya communities in Ohio grow corn, beans, squash, and traditional plants as a form of resistance and a way to stay connected to their roots. This space nourishes and teaches: by preparing and sharing traditional Maya foods, the garden becomes a living act of cultural preservation and community building. In this presentation, we will share how—from planting to the table—we cultivate dignity, flavor, and a shared future.

The Immigrant Worker Project (IWP) was founded in 1998 to address the needs of the farmworker and rural migrant communities in Ohio. At the heart of the project is a deep commitment to economic, legal, political, and social justice for the Latinx community. IWP supports human dignity and justice for immigrants while building communities that embrace cultural diversity. Our approach is based on the teachings of Paulo Freire, educator and prominent thinker of critical pedagogy, and thus all initiatives, programs, and services are collaborative in nature and formed through bottom-up leadership and goal-setting. As a result, the work of IWP continuously evolves in accordance with the needs of the community.
