About the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra
The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO) is a full symphonic ensemble bringing together dedicated young musicians of middle and high school age from across Northern Ohio. Founded in 1986 by Jahja Ling, then resident conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra, COYO provides aspiring musicians with a pre-professional orchestral training experience. The 2026–27 season celebrates COYO’s 40th anniversary under the artistic leadership of James Feddeck, Principal Conductor and Musical Advisor.
Through coaching with Cleveland Orchestra musicians, rehearsals with distinguished conductors, and performances at Severance Music Center and throughout the community, COYO members develop their musicianship and experience the collaboration and commitment that orchestral performance requires. This anniversary season also celebrates the students, alumni, teachers, and families who have shaped COYO over four decades.
Among the acclaimed artists to work with COYO are Marin Alsop, Pierre Boulez, Stéphane Denève, Christoph von Dohnányi, Giancarlo Guerrero, Witold Lutosławski, Yo-Yo Ma, Gil Shaham, Michael Tilson Thomas, Antoni Wit, and Cleveland Orchestra Music Director Franz Welser-Möst. The ensemble has shared its music with audiences abroad through four international tours.
COYO is part of The Cleveland Orchestra’s broader commitment to music education, alongside its youth choral ensembles and school programs, including Crescendo and Music Mentors. With support from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government partners, the Orchestra’s education and community programs expand access to musical experiences, support music education in schools, and help people of all ages build lasting connections with music.
Major support for the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra is provided by The Geoffrey and Sarah Gund Endowment. The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra is also supported by a generous grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and by gifts from many other donors from across Northeast Ohio. Endowment support is provided by The George Gund Foundation.
