Last week was one of the best weeks I’ve ever had at Oberlin. It was just a fantastic combination of amazing weather, productivity, and spontaneous outings. It’s truly moments like these that make me realize just how much Oberlin feels like home, and just how much I want to make sure that I soak up every minute of my time here.
Monday: Usually I like studying in underrated places on campus, but today it was snowing outside so I decided to study in arguably the most popular study spot on campus; Mudd. Mary Church Terrell Library, fondly known as Mudd, features beautiful study spaces and nooks across all of its floors. My favorite spot to study on a snowy day though is the second floor because so many of the study carrels are close to floor-to-ceiling windows that perfectly showcase the gorgeous billowing snow outside. I decided to get some overnight oats and a cappuccino from Azariah’s cafe (which is just downstairs) to use as studying motivation. It was so cozy and the perfect way to spend my morning.
Tuesday: I went to Blue Rooster Bakehouse in town and got the most divine lemon bar I’ve ever had. It was a bit warmer out today so I ate my treat in Tappan Square and was very productive. As a student there’s no better feeling than being able to check multiple items off of your list in one sitting, and today was just one of those lucky days. Another happy surprise today was discovering that one of our student dining options, Decafe, had new flavors of my favorite yogurt brand in stock! Sometimes it’s just a simple thing like having a new item at the student store that can turn a drab day into a fab day.
Wednesday: The highlight of my day was seeing Wuthering Heights with my friend at the Apollo Theatre in town. Tickets are very reasonably priced, which makes this one of my all-time favorite activities to do in town. One of the most commonly asked questions I get asked from prospies is ‘Are there things to do in town?’ And my answer is resoundingly yes! There are so many activities like concerts, trivia or game nights, and cheap movies with friends. In addition to seeing the movie, my friend and I also shared a huge popcorn which was just the cherry on top of a great evening!
Thursday: The highlight of my day was actually working in admissions. (Side note, it’s really easy to find a job on campus or in town!) I gave a private tour to a family, and they asked such thoughtful questions. Even though I’ve given so many tours at this point, getting to show families Oberlin for the first time is always exciting and reminds me why I fell in love with Oberlin in the first place.
Friday: My friend and I got the late night meal at Stevenson dining hall and I helped her practice her song for the Lunar New Year celebration on Saturday. We were still hungry so we made some mac and cheese in our dorm, which, as you can imagine, was the perfect way to kick off the weekend.
This weekend I’m looking forward to getting some free boba at a BRANCHES event, going to an Oberlin Public Health Society event on Saturday, and trying out a new restaurant in town with my friend. I hope this blog gives you a glimpse into what a fantastic week at Oberlin can look like, and gets you excited to make some memories of your own!
