Happy Valentine’s Day! Here’s some things I love about Oberlin.
Learning. There is so much to learn. Yes, hopefully you’re learning no matter where you attend. But! Here, I enjoy how I’m learning. Classes are engaging, the teachers care, and the students love to learn. (Every visiting/guest professor or director I’ve had has commented on how particularly caring and curious Oberlin students are.)
OPERA. Expect every post from me to be at least opera-related. I’ll be posting more opera-focused blogs soon, but in short: Opera is what I came to Oberlin to do. And I absolutely love it.
Variety. A big part of the reason I picked Oberlin Conservatory is because of its integration with the college. I wanted to still have somewhat of a “normal college kid experience” and to be surrounded by the other things I love besides music! And I’m not the only “con kid” that feels that way (about 1/3 of Conservatory students are in the Double-Degree Program). My class rosters always surprise me. Even for my conservatory classes. There’s not only performance majors—there’s music studies majors, journalism majors, language majors, and a bunch of other surprises. In my college classes, I am excited to meet people who I have both a lot in common with and am wildly different from. Like in my poetry class, I met a math major…whoa. (The newest addition to OCC’s student body is the Music Theater students! They are the reason I can’t hear “love letter” said anymore without wanting to sing. But to be fair, it’s not hard to get me to sing)
Energy. I love the energy and general environment of Oberlin. The atmosphere is passionate, quirky, and warm-hearted. You are supported and pushed.
