That's right, as of yesterday afternoon, we sent away the decision letters that represent the culmination of months of hard work on our end, and that will delight or disappoint almost 6000 high school students on the receiving end.
In my last post, someone requested that I post photos of our exciting "Wave to the Truck" event, and I'm happy to oblige with not just photos, but a video of the entire admissions staff celebrating the transfer of the decision letters from our mailroom to the truck. Extra bonus points to those of you who can spot my fellow admissions bloggers! (Hint: Jesse and Leslie are both wearing blue shirts. And Leslie has some kind of magic wand to make sure that the right number of students decide to enroll.)
note to self: start stalking mailman =p Do you know if/when the conservatory has sent/will send their letters? Thanks!

Elizabeth:
Thank you to you and everyone in the Admissions Office for your hard work. Good luck filling out the Class of 2014.
I remember very well the Spring Day in 1974 when my Oberlin acceptance letter came. I had only applied to 3 schools and if Oberlin had not accepted me, I would have ended up at state football factory (Univ. Tenn). What a difference (for the better) that acceptance letter made in my life!

If a merit scholarship is awarded, will it be included in the acceptance letter? Will the financial aid award be included or does this come as a separate mailing?

If you're put on the waitlist, is it possible to be accepted as a transfer from the waitlist for fall 2011? Or, if an accepted student has already enrolled at another school, is it easier to get accepted as a transfer if you've been accepted this year? Or do applicants have to go through the entire process again?

My twins both got accepted, but only one got a financial aid package (the other, who applied to the conservatory got no financial aid letter at all). Do dual degree applicants get their financial aid decisions later, or was there possibly a mistake in the system?

Regarding financial aid questions--financial aid information (including scholarships awarded) is usually included with the acceptance letter. If you applied for aid and have not received an aid award with your acceptance letter, call the Financial Aid Office to find out why (800-693-3173).
@Hank--we do not carry over the waitlist. If you do not enroll at Oberlin this fall and would like to try again for fall 2011, you would have to submit a new application.
@Rayla--yes, you are getting t-shirts! They are being mailed separately, and will probably be in your hands by the end of next week.

Does Oberlin consider any financial or scholarship award appeals? Do any of the merit scholarships awarded to students who go elsewhere get redistributed? While my son would love to attend, he was offered significantly more in merit scholarships and received additional need-based aid from a college just slightly below in rankings.

Cindy, there are some circumstances under which financial or scholarship award appeals will be considered. For questions about need-based aid, please call the Financial Aid Office at 800-693-3173. If you would like to discuss merit scholarship awards, please call the Admissions Office at 800-622-6243.

Elizabeth,
A friend of mine sent me the link to your blog. We were on vacation with our school's marching band and arrived home to an Oberlin letter putting my daughter on the wait list. Although we are a tad disappointed and not sure what her decision will be, your message reassures me that she had monumnetal mountains to climb to actually get in to Oberlin's class of 2014. And I am proud that she was considered in such a group of amazing young people. Now it's on to decision time!

Betsy, thank you for your thoughtful comments! As your daughter considers whether or not to remain on the wait list, you may wish to refer to an entry I wrote last year, Demystifying the Waitlist, which addresses some of the common questions about the wait list.

Do you post GPA/SAT statistics on the first years who are enrolled? I have seen the stats on those who are admitted, but not on those who accept and enroll.
Thank you and your office for all your hard work. I think you have chosen well based on the Obies I know.

Mark, this year's enrolling class has the following median 50% score ranges:
SAT critical reading: 660-740 SAT mathematics: 640-720 SAT writing: 650-740 ACT: 28-32
These are pretty much the same as for the previous year. I haven't seen stats on the average GPA for this year's enrolling class, but I expect that it will also be similar to last year's average, which was 3.6.

Right now, we have reached capacity for our incoming class. However, until we formally disband the wait list (no later than June 30), there's still a possibility that we may take some students off the wait list.

I have no idea if there is any chance that Roy '78 will read this comment, but I just wanted to say thanks for that because that is a pretty similar situation to mine. Okay, not super similar because though I live in Tennessee and have been urged time and again to apply to UTk, I have resisted! And I refuse to apply there. Nonetheless, I know the feeling! So that made me laugh.

Mariann, We expect that we will take some students off the waitlist this year, but we won't have any idea of how many until early May (once we find out how many admitted students decide to enroll). We will then make decisions about the waitlist throughout May and June.
