Back to School

Last week, Oberlin's campus began to come back to life, as a new crop of first-year students arrived on campus for orientation. I enjoy seeing the new students wandering around campus, full of excitement and uncertainty—it reminds me of when I was in their position, and I'm always happy to help out with directions or answers to their questions when I see them looking confused. Campus filled up even further as the returning students arrived for the start of classes this Tuesday, and it's exciting to welcome everyone back to campus. The campus events calendar is already starting to fill up with concerts and activities, and it's nice to see Oberlin transition from a cute small town to a bustling hive of learning and activity.

I'm not trying to get too melodramatic here—I just really like this time of year! In the admissions office, we particularly enjoy seeing all the new students arrive on campus because we have played such an important role in selecting the incoming class. This year's class is a great group, and it's always rewarding to meet the new students on campus and to follow their progress as they go on to do great things. I'm personally excited about this semester, because for the first time since I graduated from Oberlin four years ago, I'm taking a class! I'm sitting in on an introductory Spanish class, and it seems like it's going to be very informative and also a lot of fun.

As everyone goes back to school (in Oberlin and in high schools across the country), the admissions office is preparing to go on the road. We'll be traveling extensively throughout September and October, visiting high schools, attending college fairs, and holding special events. You can look to see if someone is coming to your area on our website at Oberlin on the Road. If you don't see any events listed, check back soon—more events will be added to the calendar as we finalize all of our travel plans. Of course, if you are planning to come visit us on campus, that's great, too! We don't all leave at the same time, so at least one of us will always be here to meet with you and answer any questions you may have.

I hope that everyone has had a great summer, and that you're as excited for this fall as I am!
