Biography

Kinney is broadly interested in contested markets, contentious politics, and punishment. His research explores how stigmatized markets for products like cannabis, cryptocurrencies, and prison tablets, gain acceptance in the public sphere. He teaches courses on the sociology of crime, law, and deviance.

Assistant Professor of Sociology Alexander Kinney accepted an invitation to serve on the editorial board of Social Currents, the official journal of the Southern Sociological Society. His three-year term in this position will run from 2026-29.
