Mechanisms through which attention alters multisensory integration
Faculty Mentor(s)
Project Description
Project Description:
Our research is dedicated to revealing the complex mechanisms by which attention shapes multisensory integration (MSI). By using a comprehensive eye-tracking system, we carefully recorded participants’ gaze and fixation duration. These data are combined with simple psychophysiological measurements, allowing us to relate gaze and fixation duration to the concept of McGurk's illusion By examining the effect of distraction type and modality have on attention, we aim to understand their role in the broader context of MSI. This comprehensive approach provides valuable insights into the coordination of emotions and enhances our understanding of the interactions between attention and multi sensory integration.
Why is your research important?
Investigating how the brain combines information from various senses contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of human perception mechanisms.
What does the process of doing your research look like?
Our typical routine involves extensive reading and analysis of research papers in collaboration with our mentor. Additionally, troubleshooting equipment issues and actively participating in the process of running experiments with participants are integral aspects of our work.
What knowledge has your research contributed to your field?
Our research has not generated solid data to make a solid conclusion. What I learned was that attention affects perception of the McGurk illusion thus multi sensory integration and it also has an effect on the distractor modality. There are also certain mechanisms by which attention alters multi sensory integration.
In what ways have you showcased your research thus far?
We read two papers per week and had presentations on those papers with the help of our mentor in the journal club. The journal club helped us analyze the data from previous research and what gap in knowledge the current research is based on.
How did you get involved in research? What drove you to seek out research experiences in college?
The opportunity to contribute to ongoing scientific inquiries and explore the practical aspects of my field motivated me to engage in hands-on research projects, fostering a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
What is your favorite aspect of the research process?
Learning how to use the software that is used in the lab and also running my lab members through the study was my favorite aspect. Also, reading previous research and analyzing the data was one of my favorites.
How has working with your mentor impacted the development of your research project? How has it impacted you as a researcher?
Engaging in the research process has deepened my appreciation, encompassing both participant management and data analysis. The hands-on experience has provided valuable insights into the complexities of research endeavors.
How has the research you’ve conducted contributed to your professional or academic development?
Conducting research has significantly contributed to enhancing my comprehension of the research experience, and our focus on extensive reading and thorough data analysis has played an important role in fostering the development of my critical thinking skills
What advice would you give to a younger student wanting to get involved in research in your field?
The thing with research is that it is helpful in all fields and you are lucky to be given this opportunity by Oberlin; use it. If it isn't for you, you can always look for something different.
