Biography

Tyler Howie is a music theorist and percussionist. He studies connections between genre theory and music theory, focusing on questions related to hermeneutics and popular music. His work examines the ways in which musical schemas and topics are related through their mediation by genre, and it asks what music analysis can tell us about relationships between and among genres. His research appears in SMT-Pod as a two-part series titled "Analytical Frameworks for Post(-Millennial) Punk."

He is also interested in American music and culture, publishing and presenting on musical minimalism and musical theater. As a percussionist, Tyler has performing, arranging, and teaching experience with marching ensembles. He currently works as a consultant with the marching band at Shippensburg University.
