Johana Horvath '28 finds professional growth at non-profit organization

What did you do this summer for your internship?

This summer I served as a media intern for Braver Angels. This was my first internship as a college student, and I loved it! I got to attend the Braver Angels National Convention in June, which took place in Philadelphia. This was an amazing opportunity as I got to work hands-on with the other interns and meet people from all over the US! As an intern, I was busy working on various projects, like reviewing footage from the convention and generating ideas and a timeline for media usage in the future. 

How did Oberlin shape or influence you to pursue this internship?

Last school year, I took Negotiations with Professor Yon Kwon. I had no idea what to expect, so when the class got right into mock negotiations, I was hooked. His class felt like hands-on experience navigating how to negotiate and compromise with an opponent. I learned the value of language and knowing your intentions when trying to get your point across. This made me interested in seeking an internship where conversation mattered.

How does this internship align with your post-college goals?

This internship has led me to meet so many people and make connections where I never imagined. I have learned many small yet useful skills about people and how organizations are run. These are skills I will take with me to my post-college endeavors.

Is there anything you’ve learned this summer that surprised you or made a big impression?

Learning the importance of civil discourse and the importance of having a strong conversational skill set has opened my mind. It is so valuable to know how to work and engage with people whom you like and whom you may disagree with. These are skills we all use every day. I am inspired to bring my knowledge to Oberlin.

What drew you to your major or area of interest?

I knew the business program would be new when I was an incoming first-year student, and I wanted to be a part of the early cohort that would shape how the business program ran in the future. I was also very excited to have access to business-oriented experiences in Cleveland!
