Commencement weekend was fantastic! After a long, harsh winter and a cold, damp spring, the weather was perfect from the first event on Friday to the graduation ceremony in sun-splashed Tappan Square on Memorial Day. The campus looked beautiful. The atmosphere and the events were great. And fabulous music, music, music filled the air and our concert venues.

Many, many thanks to all the staff, faculty, students, parents, families, and alumni who contributed to making our graduation ceremonies and reunions so great.

I had a great time getting to know some of the members of the Classes of 1964 and 1989, our 50th and 25th reunion classes, as well as folks from the 1973/1974/1975 40th cluster reunion. Many thanks to all those who helped organize these gatherings.

I especially enjoyed my time with our distinguished honorary degree recipients—Harald Vogel, Marta Kutas ’71, Christopher Browning ’67, Groesbeck Parham ’70, and United States Secretary of Labor, Thomas Perez along with alumni medal recipient Robert Lemle ’75 and distinguished service award recipient Patricia Holsworth.

Celebrating Commencement and reunions on Memorial Day weekend is a big job. I deeply appreciate all the hard work put in by everyone to make Oberlin’s biggest celebration such a great success. Thank you all so much.

Congratulations again to the Class of 2014!

It is hard to believe this will be my final "President’s Desk" column. But in August, I will become president of Pace University in New York. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your president.

Remembering Jonathan Demme

May 5, 2017

I’ve been thinking a lot about Oberlin parents and families since I received the sad news last week that Jonathan Demme, the brilliant film director, had passed away. Although Oberlin isn’t his alma mater, Jonathan really came to appreciate the College, Conservatory, and our community. His visits always seemed to energize him, and he became a stalwart supporter of our cinema studies program and the Apollo Outreach Initiative, which offers filmmaking classes to local school kids.

Response to Proposed Federal Budget Cuts

March 31, 2017

The budget proposals being put forward by the Trump administration are deeply troubling in many ways for our society and for American higher education, especially for liberal arts institutions such as Oberlin. The proposed cuts in discretionary spending are contrary to our values of access and inclusion, and our commitment to scientific research, the arts, and the humanities.
