Biography

Joe Comar is the Director of Capital Improvements and Deputy Chief Facilities Officer for the college. A native of Okemos, MI, in 1999, he earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at the United States Coast Guard Academy. He holds a Master of Business Administration at Case Western Reserve University, and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois. He also is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) and Project Management Professional (PMP).

Comar spent 20 years in the Coast Guard after his academy graduation. His Coast Guard tours include multiple stops in numerous locations including Miami, FL; Elizabeth City, NC; Champaign, Il, New London, CT; and Cleveland, OH.

From June 2012 until June 2015, he was Director of Public Works at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. His last position in the Coast Guard was as the Executive Officer and Deputy Tactical Operations Shore Infrastructure Product Line Manager at Civil Engineering Unit Cleveland, OH.

Prior to coming to Oberlin, Comar was the Civil Group Manager for a Cleveland based civil engineering firm, serving from September 2019 until his arrival in April 2021.
