Biography

Haishan “Sam” Yang is the director of intercultural engagement for international student and scholar services at Oberlin College. Sam earned an EdD in educational leadership at the University of Southern California, where his dissertation focused on Chinese students’ perception of institutional misconduct systems. As a bilingual educator, licensed K-12 instructor, and career student affairs professional, he has nearly a decade of experience supporting international students and international student organizations across residential life, student conduct, and admissions at multiple institutions. Sam’s research focuses on institutional belonging, intercultural competence, and compliance systems in higher education, especially related to internationalization efforts.

Sam specializes in mentorship and supervision and is a published author. He has presented at ACPA, ASHE, AERA, NASPA, and NAFSA and served on conference planning teams and academic commissions. He holds an MA from Boston College in international higher education and a BA from Syracuse in secondary education. A native of Shanghai, China, and having spent time in New Zealand, Canada, and the U.S., Sam brings a global, student-first perspective to both research and practice.

Outside of work, Sam is a professional photographer and an FAA-107 licensed drone pilot. He enjoys traveling, hiking, and exploring food from any and all cultures.
