Bat Prevention
Did you know bats can squeeze through openings as small as ½ inch? With students back on campus and cooler weather arriving, bats may seek warmer roosting spots. Ohio is home to 13 bat species—all protected by state law—and Oberlin sits in the path of several migratory species. While bats play an important role in the ecosystem, they can be unsettling when found indoors.
The College has sealed gaps, covered chimneys, and performed exclusion work in many buildings, but here’s how you can help prevent bat entry into your space:
- Do not prop external doors.
- Keep windows closed unless a screen is securely in place.
- If a screen is loose or damaged, submit a work order through Top Desk.
If a bat enters your space and NO contact occurs:
- Confine it to one room if possible.
- Open windows or an external door.
- Dim or turn off lights.
- Call Campus Safety at x58444. Wait for responders.
If contact has occurred or is suspected:
- The bat must be captured for testing by the Ohio Department of Health.
- Isolate it by closing windows/doors and sealing gaps with towels or clothing.
- Call Campus Safety at x58911 immediately.
- Wait for responders—EHS will transfer the bat for testing.
