In her talk, "Fellini in Yucatán: The Italian Legacy of Carlos Castaneda," Dr. Gianna Albaum (Smith College) explores the role of mysticism, altered states of consciousness, and shamanism in the later works of renowned filmmaker Federico Fellini. In addition to analyzing his final films—Intervista (1987) and The Voice of the Moon (1990)—she will also examine Fellini’s surreal and beautifully illustrated graphic novel Voyage to Tulum (Viaggio a Tulum, 1990), which recounts his real-life travels across the Yucatán Peninsula in 1984.

Dr. Gianna Albaum is a Lecturer in the Department of German and Italian at Smith College, where she specializes in the intersection of literature and medicine in modern Italy.
