Large ensembles

Oberlin boasts several premier large ensembles, so you have ample opportunities every semester to perform and train for a career in full-size concert halls. The Oberlin Orchestra, for example, is an undergraduate ensemble that can be heard on several recordings and has embarked on national and international tours during Winter Term. From classical to contemporary selections, you’ll play from a wide range of musical traditions, helping you grow into an accomplished, well-rounded artist.

During your four years of study, you’ll play in large ensembles all eight semesters.

Performance Ensembles

Chamber music

Our chamber music program has fostered award-winning ensembles such as the Poiesis Quartet, which earned the 2026 Cleveland Quartet Award, the First and Commission Prizes at the 2025 Banff International String Quartet Competition, and multiple honors in 2023, including the Fischoff Grand Prize.

For violin majors at Oberlin, six out of your eight semesters require chamber music, and most students elect chamber music for all eight.
