Biography

George W. Smith-Whitfield is a committed higher education administrator with over a decade of experience in case management. As the director of student support and outreach, he offers vital support and resources to students during their times of need. George collaborates with both on-campus and off-campus partners to holistically support and enhance student well-being.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, George earned a bachelor’s degree in social work and a master’s degree in education at Cleveland State University. Additionally, he holds a master’s degree in divinity with a minor in Africana/African American religion from Drew University. He is currently pursuing a PhD in higher education administration at Kent State University.

He is a Life Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Additionally, he is affiliated with the Association of Black Social Workers. He was recognized as the inaugural Outstanding Non-Clinical Case Manager by the Higher Education Case Management Association (HECMA).

George’s interests include social justice, advocacy, and the support and retention of marginalized students, including BIPOC, and first-generation college students. He is passionate about creating brave spaces that empower students to achieve their full potential. When not at Oberlin, George enjoys traveling the world and spending time with family and friends. He also serves as a pastor at a church in Akron, Ohio.
