Nicholas Kuipers ’14 is a politics major with an honors concentration in political theory. He has been awarded a 10-month Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Indonesia.

A native of Falls Church, Virginia, Kuipers says his foremost goal is to learn the language and engage with the community in which he’ll be placed. He also plans to travel around the archipelago nation. “Indonesia is made up of more than 17,000 islands, and each one has something different to offer. It’s a bit daunting to specify the locations I will visit, but I intend to visit the Borobodur temple outside of Yogyakarta,” says Kuipers, who has traveled abroad extensively, twice to Indonesia.

Kuipers studied abroad in the Oberlin-in-London program in spring 2013. After the Fulbright year, he says he is interested in pursuing a career in public policy. “I'm interested in both international affairs and domestic policy (education policy, among other areas), so I think a Fulbright scholarship will provide me with valuable tools for both of those interests.”
