A New Year in the Division of Student Life

Emeritus Professor of Composition Edward J. Miller (1930-2013)

Longtime faculty member Edward J. Miller was a prolific composer and a versatile educator whose works were performed by orchestras around the world and by many fellow professors. He died August 31, 2013.

The start of a new school year always seems to be accompanied by a burst of criticism from some pundits who question the relevance, the cost, and the purpose of higher education, especially at liberal arts institutions. While I’m not eager to fuel the chattering machine, I do believe deeply in the value of liberal arts education.
