There is a line between free speech and harassment and threats. I believe the recent, repeated instances of racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic messages have crossed it.

Oberlin teaches students to be innovative, interdisciplinary thinkers, engaged citizens, and agents of positive social change. We teach students to value facts and evidence, to think critically, and to see the world from multiple viewpoints.

While studying history requires us to take a critical look at the past, it also serves to remind us that history is constantly being made and that we all can play a role in its making.

I hope your January has been a rewarding time of growth, learning, and reflection. Looking ahead, we have a full slate of wonderful events coming up in February.
