Biography
I am a molecular biologist whose research focuses on gene regulation, RNA biology, and the molecular mechanisms underlying health and disease. My work has spanned bacterial antimicrobial resistance, Trypanosoma cruzi biology, post-transcriptional regulation in Escherichia coli, and, more recently, human liver metabolism and disease. As a postdoctoral researcher at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, I have investigated the roles of long noncoding RNAs, RNA-binding proteins, and nonsense-mediated mRNA decay in regulating hepatic metabolism and liver disease. My research has resulted in publications across microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, and RNA biology, as well as support from an American Heart Association Research Supplement to Promote Diversity in Science.
Alongside my research training, I have pursued extensive preparation in evidence-based STEM education through the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), with an emphasis on backward design, active learning, collaborative learning, and inclusive teaching.
Beyond the laboratory and classroom, I am committed to mentorship, science communication, education, and building scientific communities. I have mentored undergraduate, graduate, and professional trainees; organized RNA Biology and Therapeutics trainee retreats; served as a mentor and presentation judge through SACNAS; and contributed to science communication through the Johns Hopkins Biomedical Odyssey Blog. Outside of my academic work, I enjoy drawing, storytelling, science fiction, and video games.
