Biography
Grammy® Award winning pianist Luis Perdomo has released nine critically acclaimed recordings as a leader, and has appeared on over 200 recordings as a sideman. Perdomo holds a bachelor's degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where he was a student of Harold Danko, and a master's degree from Queens College, where he studied with Sir Roland Hanna. In addition, he studied with Gerry Weil, his first teacher at age 10, Martha Pestalozzi, and Jaki Byard.
Perdomo has performed and recorded with a wide variety of artists, such as Ravi Coltrane, David Gilmore, Jerry Bergonzi, Tom Harrell, Brian Lynch, Ray Barretto, Henry Threadgill, Ralph Irizarry, David Sanchez, George Garzone, Jerry Gonzalez, the Fort Apache Band, and The Vanguard Orchestra amongst others—a list that is as notable both by its high standard as well as its diversity.
He is a founding member of the Miguel Zenón Quartet, a collaboration that has yielded 12 recordings in 25 years. Miguel Zenon and Luis’ collaboration El Arte del Bolero, a duo recording, was nominated for both a Grammy® and a Latin Grammy® in 2022. Their follow up album El Arte del Bolero Vol 2 received a 2024 Grammy® Award for “Best Latin Jazz Record.”
In addition to keeping a busy performing schedule worldwide with his own projects and as a sideman, Perdomo is very active as a professor of music. He has taught at Queens College since 2017, The New School, MIT, and was a professor of ensembles and piano at Berklee College of Music 2021-25. In addition, he is a guest clinician in many summer camps for universities and conservatories worldwide and he is part of the faculty at the “Jazz in July” workshops at UMass, Amherst.
