Tom Payne ’80, David N. and Margaret C. Bottoms Professor of Music at William and Mary, will present “Three Strikes and You’re Out”: Numerical Symbolism in J.S. Bach’s Third Brandenburg Concerto.” His work on Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos offers a musical and numerical case study of eighteenth-century composition and patronage and would provide a useful point of contrast with developments in the Spanish Americas at the time, which I'll discuss in my class.
