Confused about AI's environmental impact? Oberlin's new AI policies have left many students curious about AI's water and land use, as well as general environmental impact. However, sources are confusing. Does a query from ChatGPT cost a fraction of a teaspoon of water, or thousands of gallons? How much carbon is emitted when I generate a picture of Trump hula-hooping? We usually see AI just on our computers, but how do the data centers AI draws from effect local communities and ecosystems? We hope to answer these questions and clear up misconceptions about AI to promote responsible use.
