Join guest lecturer Professor Philip Pettit for the Rhoden Lecture "Democracy: the what, the why and the how"

What is democracy? An electoral system, or a system that also gives the people other channels of influence over government? Why does it appeal? Because it allows people to form a common will, or because it constrains government to meet community expectations and promote electorally tested policies? And how is it to be organized? Around a single source of authority or across a network of mutually checking centers of power?
