The Santa Elena Project of Accompaniment (SEPA) is an Oberlin nonprofit that has maintained a solidarity relationship with two Maya returned refugee communities in Guatemala, Copal AA la Esperanza and Santa Elena Veinte de Octubre. Founder John Gates graduated from Kent State University in1969 with a major in Political Science. He received his MA in Elementary Education from Oberlin College and spent 29 years in education, both as a teacher and principal. John and his wife Linda have lived in Oberlin for 56 years where they are active members of First Church. They have two grown children and two grandchildren. John remains an active and integral part of SEPA, not only serving on the board, but also chopping word for SEPA fundraisers, attending community outreach events, and serving as an inspiration on how to lead a good and useful life. John says that faith, resilience, and persistence are three qualities that he has strengthened through his work with the people of Copal AA and Santa Elena. He’s excited to share his story. Sarah Johnson is a 2015 Oberlin College graduate, majoring in Classics. Sarah was part of the Ecumenical Christians of Oberlin and a member of Peace Community Church during her four years on campus. Following graduation, she spent a year in Guatemala as a human rights accompanier. She returned to the area to work at El Centro in Lorain. Sarah joined the board of SEPA in 2018 and serves as Vice-Chair. Sarah is excited to speak about our work with SEPA and the role faith plays in it.
