Jack Davis, the Carl Blegen Professor of Greek Archaeology at the University of Cincinnati has been excavating at the site of Pylos with his spouse, Shari Stocker, for over 30 years. In 2017, the team made a remarkable discovery: they excavated an undisturbed tomb of a Mycenaean warrior, soon to be known as the “Griffin Warrior”. His grave included an incredible trove of weapons, jewelry, and greek sealstones of unprecedented quality. The discovery of this burial assemblage is changing our understanding of Late Helladic culture and its relationship to the “Minoan” culture on Crete during the late bronze age. Professor Davis will come to Oberlin to present on his research and this remarkable find in “The Griffin Warrior and the Kingdom of Pylos”.
