The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry hosts guest speaker Katie Colbaugh, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Chen Lab at Oberlin College. Her presentation will be on the topic of “Calculating Macroscopic Properties of Crystals.”
The seminar will be preceded by a reception at 4:30 p.m. in the David Love Lounge.

Abstract:
Crystals, inorganic extended solids, are the functional components in devices used in medical, energy, communications, and computing applications. However, the material properties of currently available crystals are not keeping pace with the performance requirements of advancing technologies. For example, quantum computing remains limited by the availability of crystals. Challenges in large-scale crystal growth present a significant bottleneck in research and development, making effective predictive methods essential. We have evaluated several existing models and proposed new calculations based on crystal structure data. We will also explore how rapidly evolving machine learning approaches can enable the manufacturing of next-generation crystals.
