Join us for a special career panel with Rodrigo A. Somoza, PhD. With over two decades of experience in molecular biology, bioengineering, and stem cell research, Somoza will share his career journey and insights into the intersections of basic science, translational research, and biomedical innovation. This is a unique opportunity for students interested in STEM and research pathways to learn directly from an internationally recognized scientist. Hosted by Career Exploration and Development (CED) and STRONG, Oberlin Undergraduate Research (OUR). This event is part of the Latine Heritage Month Celebration series on campus. Lunch will be provided.

Somoza is a Research Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Skeletal Research Center at Case Western Reserve University. Originally from Chile, he has built an internationally recognized career in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and cancer biology, with a focus on human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and their dual roles in tissue repair and disease. With major NIH-funded projects, including studies on cartilage regeneration and skeletal metastasis, Somoza has an advanced understanding of how hMSCs respond to their environment and can be harnessed for therapy. Originally trained in biotechnology in Chile, he has published widely in leading journals and is a dedicated mentor to students and early-career scientists. His vision is to unlock the healing potential of our own cells to address challenges from arthritis to cancer.
