A two-day conference on progressive politics sponsored by the Oberlin Department of Politics, Oberlin Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA), and provided with the support of the JD Lewis Memorial Lectureship and Oscar Jászi Lectureship.
The first half of the conference, October 3 in Dye Lecture Hali, centered on discussion of capitalist crises. It includes talks by Chris Howell (James Monroe Professor of Politics Emeritus, Oberlin College), Jeffrey Winters (Professor of Political Science, Northwestern University), and Ronald Suny (William Sewell Professor of History, University of Michigan; Professor of History Emeritus, Oberlin College and University of Chicago), and plenty of time for discussion, both in the session and then informally at the reception to follow from 6 to 7 p.m.
The second half, October 4 in King Building Room 106, focuses on democratic socialist alternatives. It features Bhaskar Sunkara (founding editor of Jacobin, president of The Nation, publisher of Catalyst: A Journal of Theory and Strategy, and a former vice-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America), Robert Kuttner (Oberlin College ’65, co-founder and current co-editor of The American Prospect and Meyer and Ida Kirstein Professor of Social Policy, Brandeis University), and Les Leopold (Oberlin College ’70, co-founder and executive director of the Labor Institute). There will also be plenty of time for discussion, both in the session and then informally at the reception to follow from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
