Do you have an interest in music from different cultures? Do you want to participate in a unique learning experience about Bulgarian music and dance from an expert?

Bulgarian music is known for its uniqueness with its complex harmonies and highly irregular rhythms. With a deep history and many unique instruments that are not commonly seen in Western music, Dr. Ian MacMillen from Yale University will be giving a Bulgarian dance master class and music lecture here at Oberlin! A unique opportunity to learn in depth about both Bulgarian dance and music from an expert in the field, this master class is open to the public, free, and no dance experience is needed!

A current professor at Yale’s Department of Music, Dr. MacMillen was a postdoctoral fellow in Oberlin College’s Russian and East European Studies program, and a former director of Oberlin’s Center for Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies. With expertise in Ethnomusicology, Dr. MacMillien’s current research examines intersections of the sonic and affective materialities of musical performance with discourses on violence, trauma, and reconciliation, primarily in the former Ottoman Europe.

This event was made possible by the Oberlin Center Oberlin Center for Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies Winter Term Grant. Please contact ekawamur@oberlin.edu for any questions!
