Join celebrated Korean-American artist Julia Kwon for a lecture and workshop on Collective Quilting. Kwon's interpretive bojagi -- traditional Korean wrapping cloths, embedded with patterns that explore themes of identity, community, and more -- have been exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery (Washington, DC), Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA), Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (New York, NY), and more.

The workshop, Collective Quilting, is a collaborative project where participants contribute to a large communal quilt while discussing issues regarding ethnicity, gender, and other categories used for group-based othering. During the workshop, participants may bring in remnant fabrics from their own lives or embroider images and texts to share their thoughts and personal experiences of discrimination using the supplies that are provided. At the end of the workshop, each work will be collected to be added to a larger patchwork in support and solidarity with others.

The event will begin with a lecture at 1 p.m. and will transition into the workshop ending at 3:30 p.m. All are welcome!

Open to all members of the public
