Over the past year, around a dozen colleagues have approached the Lemle to ask about alternative grading practices. It's happening across institutions, according to what I hear from people at other teaching centers. Of course, interest in redesigning grading and assessment has been growing for more than a decade. Recently, however, this interest—like the broader surge in attention to pedagogical practices—has been supercharged by the arrival and increasing normalization of generative AI/LLMs.

Please join us for a  50-minute session (too short, no doubt), for a conversation with three Oberlin faculty members who have experimented with and engaged in various forms of alternative grading, including contract/labor-based grading, standards-based grading, and more idiosyncratic homebrews: Wendy Hyman (English), Zeb Page (Geosciences), and Christine Wu (Psychology).  Wendy, Zeb, and Christine will discuss their approaches—the what, why, and how—, and then we’ll have a conversation among those present.

Lunch provided. RSVPs are very welcome. E-mail me at sgutierr@oberlin.edu
